words of wisdom

Words of wisdom regarding how to achieve success in the ever so small world of advertising. An except from Deb’s new book:

“And remember, for such a huge industry, the creative world is relatively small.

You’ll find all sorts of relationships - former partners and co-workers, I used to

work with him and he’s a real ____ (insert good or bad descriptor here) sort of

connections. People move around, move up the ladder, take on new responsibilities.

As they do, they bring with them a network. You’ll use yours a million

times over the course of your career.”

Pack Less. Weigh Less. Pay Less.

No, it’s not for a real airline, but what another brilliant campaign!  The “new” airline, Derrie-air allegedly charges passengers by the pound - following their policy: the more you weigh, the more you pay.  This campaign for the fictitious airline was created by Philadelphia Media Holdings and Gyro ad agency to “demonstrate the power of our brands in generating awareness and generating traffic for our advertisers, and put a smile on people’s faces.”

camels.

I’m not quite sure why I began thinking of camels.  Maybe because today in my advertising class we were talking about Joe Camel, the cartoon figure for cigarettes.  However, if you really think about it - man, camels are so….I hate to say it…but…weird!  They have humps on their back to store fat!  How the heck did that get there.  What a weird place to store fat and what an odd shape it takes.  When the camel has alot of fat to store, the hump is “upright and stiff” however, when the camel does not have much reserve fat, the hump is “loose and flabby.”  !!!!!!!!!!!!  so crazy!!!  Here is a camel to serve as a visualization:

break dancing.

One of the great things about attending the University of Oregon is the opportunity to attend events of all sorts: lectures, dances, movies, speeches, etc.  This past Friday, the U of O hosted a break dance battle which included groups from all over Oregon and Washington.  Although I am (clearly) not a break dancer, I can appreciate and respect this truly amazing form of expression.  Here is one of the videos I took throughout the night. (If you want to see the other five videos, just hop on you tube and you’ll find them there!!)

looking into the future.

These past few weeks in my ad. account management class, two fellow classmates and I have been researching and analyzing Starbucks and it’s music.  What I found especially interesting is the fact that Starbucks has taken extreme measures to return to it’s heritage and personal coffee shop feeling by reevaluating the branding strategy, closing hundreds of stores, retraining employees AND revamping the music.  I was curious about this, so I went to Starbucks a few times over the course of the case study to take in what I could and learn about the current music of Starbucks.  After taking it all in, What surprised the most was how the music at Starbucks seems to be represent more mainstream artists, edging away from local behind-the-scene artists as well as the incorporation of cutting edge technology which includes the iTunes Wi-Fi music… It’s just seemed interesting to me that Starbucks is working towards returning to it’s heritage by representing a traditional local coffee house; however, is featuring mainstream artists and sponsoring modern day technology…Is this at all contradictory? Counteractive? Beneficial to the Starbucks brand?

procrastination.

We’ve all been there.  Some of us more than others.  Possibly me at this moment as I’m at the library writing a paper on product placement in video games…

Anyway, enjoy:

I was stumbling today, found this image and had to laugh at myself because frequently my hand looks like this. Granted, the notes I write on my hand aren’t love notes; however, more often than not, I find my to-do list on my right hand rather than on a piece of paper. I must say, although it might not be the healthiest idea, it has been quite the conversation starter on numerous occasions…
